Spring is here and so the time for honey production has begun. The increased demand for locally produced and organic food has made more people want to cultivate in the city, transforming their back gardens into lush havens filled with flowers, fruit and vegetables. In Brussels alone, there are some 200 city beekeepers and 600 hives.

If you do not have the time or place to create your own honey, there are a few places you can find local honey, including in stores like “färm”, online on “Nectar & Co.” as well as on local street markets. However most of the local honeys you might find around the city areas will make an exception to the 100% organic rule.

So does Belgian organic honey exist in Belgium? The conditions for obtaining the organic label are almost impossible to respect for Belgian beekeepers. As the bees move within a radius of 3 km, hives must therefore be at least 3 km from all industries, non-organic crops and highways. Hence there is hardly any Belgian organic honey!

If you would like to buy certified honey it is highly recommended to buy honey around the area of Louvain-La-Neuve and Meiser.
